Note that the only devices that can run the preview are Google’s own Pixel 3, 3a, 4, 4a, 4a (5G), or 5. As always for these developer-only releases, you will need to install a system image and update the relevant SDK tools.
Google’s VP of Engineering, Dave Burke, writes:
“In Android 12 we’re continuing to focus on making the OS smarter, easier to use, and better performing, with privacy and security at the core. We’re also working to give you new tools for building great experiences for users on phones, laptops, tablets, TVs, or cars. Some things to check out in today’s release include a new app launch experience, new video and camera capabilities to help you get more out of underlying hardware support, and a new permission for exact alarms to help users save battery.”
Features
New features in the latest major version of Android include audio-coupled haptic effect, a new splash screen API, call notifications allowing for ranking the importance of incoming calls, animated images for notifications, a RoundedCorner API, improvements for picture-in-picture (PiP) mode, making gesture navigation easier, better handling of rich content and quad bayer camera sensor support…
For example, on haptic feedback, Google writes:
“Android 12 apps can generate haptic feedback derived from an audio session using the phone’s vibrator. This provides an opportunity for more immersive game and audio experiences. For example, haptic-enhanced ringtones can help identify callers, or a driving game could simulate the feeling of rough terrain.”

The projected timeline for Android 12 is shown below, with Beta releases expected to begin in June. Developer preview 2 was released 17 March 2021.
