Element14 launches robotics design challenge

Element14 has announced the Twist, Turn and Move Robotics design challenge to design and build a robotic arm or mobile robot that performs a specific task. Participants need to move as swiftly and smoothly as their creations: submissions close on Monday 6 June 2022.

Those selected will received a ‘challengers’ kit’ with an Arudino Uno and TE Connectivity products including cable, various connectors (M8, D-sub and wired board types), expansion board and motor driver shield. To enrol in the challenge, visit the website  to see the timelines and details of the ‘challengers’ kit’ which is for use in the entry. The kit can be bought online, although 15 challengers will be selected as sponsored challengers and receive the Challenger’s Kit. These will be announced on 10 June. All entrants must use the kit within their project and publish their final code and designs on the element14 Community for others to use.

Designers will be challenged to create designs such as a robot arm which can pick up and set down an object or one that moves in all degrees of freedom, or a mobile robot that follows a line or that can avoid an object in its path.

Participants have 11 weeks to build their project and must blog at least five times to post their progress and present the final robot project by 19 August. Part of the judging criteria will be the use of TE Connectivity components and the robot’s interesting use of movement.

“From robotic arms on the international space station to home vacuums and mops, using robots to help with everyday activities is a normal occurrence for many people and no longer science fiction,” said Dianne Kibbey, global head of community and social media for the element14 Community. “We’re so excited to see what kind of robots our community members create and are looking forward to seeing how they enhance their robotics skills and create something innovative in their designs.”

The first place winner will receive a Flashforge Guider II 3D printer and an iRobot Roomba self emptying robot vacuum cleaner. The runner-up will receive an iRobot Braava Jet Robot mop and an Ender 3 V2 3D printer. Any entrant to post five blogs and a project with the featured products will receive a MultiComp Pro multimeter set.
