Nordic’s 91% efficient SiP joins Rutronik’s linecard

The low power system in package (SiP) from Nordic Semiconductor, the nRF9160 Gen2 is now available from Rutronik. The integrated SiP has power saving and security functions, making it suitable for use in IoT projects. At 91% efficiency, it is more power efficient that comparable modules currently available, claims the distributor.

For power saving, it has eDRX and PSM and an Arm Cortex-M33 application processor supported by 1Mbyte of flash and 256kbyte of RAM. It also includes a full LTE modem and RF front end.

The integrated modem supports both LTE-M and NB-IoT and does not need regional variants. Different connection modes allow for different energy consumption rates. For example, RRC connected allows for permanent network connection and constant data exchange, which requires a higher energy input. There is also RRC idle mode for short sleep intervals but availability on demand and a shorter download latency than for power saving mode.

The SiP has an integrated GPS transmitter with different operating modes, IPv4/Pv6 support, up to TCP and TLS, SIM and eSIM possible for connection and authentication with mobile network operators, secure, encrypted firmware over the air updates and a range of peripherals (12-bit ADC, RTC, SPI, I²C, I²S, UARTE, PDM and PWM). It is certified for LTE bands B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B8, B12, B13, B14, B17, B18, B19, B20, B25, B26, B28 and B66.

The inclusion of Arm TrustZone is complemented by the Arm CryptoCell security which is optimised for low power devices. A development kit is also available.
