New York ditches robotaxi proposal

The Governor of the State of New York, Kathy Hochul, has withdrawn a proposal which would have allowed Waymo to apply to run robotaxis in New York State (though not in New York City).

“Based on conversations with stakeholders, including in the legislature, it was clear that the support was not there to advance this proposal,” said the Governor’s spokesperson. No  robotaxi services have ever been permitted in the city,

Waymo vehicle San FranciscoUnions, including the New York Taxi Workers Alliance, workers in the transportation industry and rideshare drivers objected to the proposal citing safety concerns and the possibility of job losses.

Waymo is currently testing autonomous cars in New York City and is planning to launch a driverless robotaxi service in London by September 2026. 



A pilot programme in London  with safety drivers mapping city streets is expected to begin in April 2026, followed by fully autonomous, passenger-carrying services in September, pending regulatory approvals.

Waymo plans to launch robotaxi services in 20 cities this year.
