Nissan sinks to lowest market share for 32 years

Last year, Nissan’s new vehicle sales in Japan hit their lowest market share since 1993 – 9% – according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association (JADA) and the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association (JLMVMA).

New Nissan sales in Japan were down 15% to 403,105 units, lower even than 2022’s 449,458 units when the industry was hit by a chip shortage.

Sales of the Note, the best-selling compact car in Japan, were 20% down in the January to November period.

Nissan is now the perennial No.5 in the Japanese market after: Toyota, Suzuki, Honda, and Daihatsu.

Overall new vehicle sales in Japan in 2025 were up 3% to about 4.57 million units, the first increase in two years, but it remained the sixth consecutive year that sales remained below 5 million units, indicating domestic sales are continuing to trend downward.
