First WinCE virus reported

A virus that targets ARM based devices running Windows CE has been identified. Anti-virus firms say it is the first malicious code aimed at WinCE, although it has not been designed to spread and is intended as a “proof of concept”.

The virus, known as WinCE.Dust.A (although Sophos calls it WinCE Duts-A), opens a dialogue box asking for the user’s permission to execute and append itself to any uninfected .exe files in the current directory. Its author is part of the 29A VX group.

“The same as the creators of Cabir (the virus for Symbian OS), the initiator of the Dust malware has not designed it to propagate on a massive scale, but rather to demonstrate that devices running Microsoft Windows CE can be infected by malicious code,” said Viorel Canja, head of anti-virus company BitDefender Labs.

Windows CE is used by over 17 million Pocket PCs, smartphones, and other Internet devices.
