Europe makes push in embedded

The European Commission has joined with 17 organisations from the electronics and engineering community to promote Europe’s efforts in ICs and software.

The public/private partnership is called ARTEMIS: Advanced R&D on Embedded Intelligent Systems. It aims to promote technology in all products from automotive to mobile telecoms and banking smartcards.

The focus is on embedded electronics, and the group will promote open standards to improve interoperability between different vendors’ systems.

“Europe currently leads the world in embedded technologies in industries such as automotive, avionics, telecoms, consumer and manufacturing,” said Enterprise and Information Society Commissioner Erkki Liikanen. “As new product innovations increasingly rely on interconnected, embedded systems technology, reinforcing our leadership throughout the innovation chain is vital to sustain the productivity, competitiveness and growth of all these industries.”

ARTEMIS is due to be established by the end of the year, the EC said. A document detailing the group’s ‘vision’ will be drawn up in November at a meeting in the Hague.

Members of ARTEMIS are ABB, Airbus Industrie, BT Exact, Continental Teves, Daimler Chrysler, Ericsson, IMEC, Nokia, Parades, Philips, Robert Bosch, STMicroelectronics, Symbian, Telenor, Thales, Verimag, and Technical University of Vienna.
