Airbus Defence and Space will be building a further 340 OneWeb Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for the OneWeb constellation. The defence company confirmed the contract award from Eutelsat, of which OneWeb is now a subsidiary, following their merger in 2022. Also a batch of 100 satellites was ordered in December 2024, which brings the total number of satellites required ...

Manufacturing electronics on the moon

IMG_1563-300x200.webp

A Danish-led ESA project will pave the way for the manufacture of electronics directly on the Moon. The goal is to reduce future lunar missions’ dependence on supplies from Earth. Future lunar missions face a fundamental challenge: the high cost and difficult transport of materials from Earth. Now, a new project supported by the European Space Agency (ESA) will demonstrate ...

Ukraine, Sweden expand access to ICEYE’s satellite SAR imagery

ClearSpace, an in-orbit services company, and the European Space Agency (ESA) have started their Prelude mission. This is developing space technology for both in-orbit life extension and active debris removal (ADR). It involves both advanced space manoeuvres and relative navigation technologies, for craft to work together in-orbit. For example, two small spacecraft will be working together in orbit. As well ...

Powell adds Samtec’s latest high-density, high-speed connectors

Samtec AccelRate mP from Powell Electronics

Samtec’s 0.635 mm pitch AcceleRate mP series connectors are now available from Powell Electronics. The high-density, high-speed power and signal array connectors feature rotated power blades for efficient cooling in a compact form factor. The power blades are rotated at 90º angles which gives equal access to heat escape for uniform cooling, explains Samtec. It also simplifies the breakout region, ...

Plastic transient voltage suppressors for aerospace and defence

Microchip plane image for military qualified plastic transient voltage suppressor

Microchip has announced a family of non-hermetic plastic uni-directional TVS (transient voltage suppressor) devices that meet the MIL-PRF-19500/716 for aerospace and defence. “These TVS devices are the first in the industry to achieve MIL-PRF-19500 qualification in a plastic package,” claimed the company. Voltage ratings range from 5V to 175V, and Microchip lists several variants: JANPTX1N5555UJ JANPTX1N5558UG JANPTX1N5629AUJ JANPTX1N5665AUG JANPTX1N5907UG JANPTX1N5907UJ ...

How YMIN’s LKC Achieves Only 11.62% Capacitance Loss at -55 °C – Benchmarked Against Japanese and Taiwanese High-Voltage Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors Dear fellow engineers, one of the most frustrating challenges in power supply design is when capacitors “let you down” due to severe capacitance degradation in low-temperature environments. Today, through a set of real comparative test data, we take a ...

China files to launch 193,448 satellites

IMG_1565-300x200.webp

China has submitted two filings to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), each for 96,714 satellites. The CTC-1 filing is for a single notional Non-Geostationary Orbit (NGSO) system. The CTC-2 filing is still at the Advanced Publication Information stage. CTC-1 and CTC-2 are early-stage ITU regulatory filings but don’t authorise launches. Although filed as two separate NGSO networks, CTC-1 and CTC-2 ...
