Ofcom allocates spectrum for IoT
Ofcom is to allocate 10MHz of VHF spectrum in the 55-68MHz, 70.5-71.5MHz and 80.5-81.5MHz bands for the IoT. Currently, licence exempt devices including M2M can access spectrum in the 870-876MHz and 915-921MHz bands. Ofcom says that the low data rates of IoT applications don’t require more spectrum. Business radio licences will continue to be available until the new dedicated IoT/M2M ...
Low power wireless for IoT and the case for going non-standard
In the design of an internet-connected node in the IoT the power consumption of the wireless interface be it 802.11x Bluetooth or ZigBee can be a critical parameter. Professor Dr Dogan Ibrahim puts the case for proprietary low power radio modules Power is a problem for IoT developers – and communication links are one of the most power hungry elements ...
Socionext transceiver claims record for 100Gbit/s transmission on a single wavelength
Socionext, the Panasonic-Fujitsu SoC jv, has launched a 100G per wavelength, fully-integrated transceiver based on Discrete-Multitone (DMT) modulation with a power dissipation of less than 5W which, says the company, is a record for transmission of 100Gbit/s using a single wavelength. Migration to 100G optical links between data centres has started. The need for low-cost, efficient transport at the physical layer ...
MediaTek uses Lattice chipset to drive 4K video in smartphones
MediaTek is working with FPGA supplier Lattice Semiconductor on a reference design for a USB Type-C connector interface which support 4K video. Lattice’s USB Type-C port controllers and MHL transceivers are paired with MediaTek’s Helio X20, mobile processor with Tri-Cluster CPU architecture and ten processing cores. In a smartphone design the MHL transmitter carries the 4K video, while the SiI7033 ...
Xilinx: finfets deliver 56G PAM4 transceiver
Xilinx, has developed 16nm finfet-based 56G transceiver technology using the 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4). “PAM4 solutions will help drive the next wave of Ethernet deployment for optical and copper interconnects by doubling bandwidth on the existing infrastructure,” said the firm. The company’s 56G PAM4 transceiver technology has been developed to tackle physical limitations of data transmission at such line ...
Pericom cleans up automotive PCIe
Pericom Semiconductor, recently acquired by Diodes, has announced multiple PCI Express products for embedded and automotive computing. For example there are AEC-Q100 qualified signal repeater chips, which it brands ‘ReDrivers’, for longer USB 3.0 and PCIe cables. ReDrivers compensate for signal distortion, but do not digitally re-time signals – take a look at this Pericom video. As well, “PI7C9X2G308GP is ...
Sequans completes LTE interoperability testing with NTT DOCOMO
Sequans has completed interoperability testing of its Calliope Cat 1 LTE chipset with NTT DOCOMO. It is the first single-mode Cat 1 LTE chip solution to enter the market in Japan. Cat 1 LTE is the lowest throughput category of the existing LTE standard and can economically connect numerous types of IoT devices while coexisting with Cat 3 and 4 ...
Smart glass charges your mobile from sunlight
Solar charging has often been seen as a novel, yet green, way to charge your smart device whilst on the move, offering modest charging capabilities so long as the solar panels remain in direct sunlight, writes Tom Wilson. However what if the same technology could be baked right into the glass of a smartphone display, or the face of a ...
Trenz board enables 5G embedded development
Trenz Electronic’s TE0808 UltraSoM+ system-on-module provides design engineers with a multiprocessing environment for the development of embedded systems like 5G wireless, ADAS systems and industrial IoT applications, the company says. According to Trenz Electronic it integrates Xilinx’s Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC with up to 4GB of DDR4 SDRAM main memory with 32-bit width, up to 512MB of flash, a switch-mode power ...
