Singapore and Japan agree wide-ranging partnership

Yesterday Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Singapore’s Prime Minister Lawrence Wong (pictured) agreed to form a strategic partnership in trade, technology and defence.

‘We uphold the international order based on the rule of law, a rules-based multilateral trading system, and a free, open, transparent, resilient, inclusive and rules-based regional architecture’, said a joint statement.

The two PMs asserted their commitment to the principles of the ASEAN Outlook on the Open Indo-Pacific (AOIP) and the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP).


Wong cited current “uncertainty, fragmentation and disruption” as reasons for closer cooperation. The cooperation will focus on: free trade and economic cooperation; digitalisation and technology, including AI and chips; security; decarbonisation and energy.

The two countries agreed to promote open innovation and co-creation in areas including digital and green transformations, including AI, automation, quantum computing, fusion energy, space, secure digital systems, semiconductor R&D and defence-related technologies,.

They agreed to work together on law enforcement and fighting transnational crime including drug trafficking, online scams, money laundering, people trafficking  and cybercrime, as well as terrorism and violent extremism

‘We will work together at regional economic fora such as the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) to advance our shared commitment to free and open trade,’ said the statement, ‘we will ensure the implementation of the ASEAN-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership (AJCEP) Agreement, Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Agreement, and Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).’
