BAE collaborates on 152GHz InP chip

BAE Systems in the US has been working with Vitesse Semiconductor and the University of Illinois to design what they claim is one of the fastest semiconductor devices ever produced. Made using an indium phosphide process, the frequency divider circuits have been clocked at 152GHz. The devices were designed by BAE Systems and manufactured in Vitesse’s indium phosphide heterojunction bipolar ...

Southampton University sets up silicon services centre

A dedicated silicon technology centre providing advanced services to UK and European industry has been created at Southampton University. The new venture, which is called Innos, has emerged from the EPSRC-funded Silicon Fabrication Facility, a centre which has offered research capability mainly to UK academics for the past 20 years. Innos will be headed by Steve Byars, a former COO ...

MEMS device looks at friction in microscale

Researchers at Sandia Labs have developed a MEMS device called the ‘inchworm’ to investigate friction in microscale objects. While the simple relationship F=normal force x the coefficient of friction holds true at the macroscale, it does not necessarily do so for small devices, where there is a large surface to volume ratio and adhesive forces may add to conventional friction. ...
