CMX500 radio communication tester covers all NTN technologies

Rohde & Schwarz’s CMX500 radio communication tester can now cover all non-terrestrial network (NTN) technologies, the company highlights. It also features a Constellation Insight Tool to create a digital twin of the live sky.

The one-box tester supports NR-NTN, NB-NTN and Direct-to-Cell (D2C, DTC) technologies. Users can now test all NTN technologies on both network and device level, without the need for multiple instruments, highlights Rohde & Schwarz.

It supports two primary testing configurations. First, full Satellite Access Network (SAN) emulation for device manufacturers. This is for simulating the NTN architecture for device testing

And second, gNB and 5G core network emulation for satellite network operators. This is for validating satellite network components against standards-compliant cellular technologies.

The company writes:

“As NTN matures alongside 5G and looks towards 6G, overcoming significant technical hurdles is key to realizing its potential. Unlike terrestrial networks, NTNs present unique communication challenges due to the dynamic nature of satellites.”

“Rapid satellite movement causes frequent changes in signal characteristics, including Doppler frequency shifts, variable propagation delay and high path loss, requiring advanced channel emulation. Further complexity arises from the use of multiple orbits (LEO, MEO, GEO) and frequency bands, often necessitating Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) instead of the Time Division Duplex (TDD) common in terrestrial networks.”

Features of the CMX500:

  • LTE, 5G FR1 frequency range up to 8 GHz and FR2 millimeterwave frequency range up to 50 GHz in one instrument
  • Support of 5G stand-alone mode non-stand-alone mode
  • Support of WLAN signaling testing for Station and Access Point up to IEEE802.11be (Wi-Fi7)
  • Support for cellular and non-cellular Signaling and Non-Signaling in one instrument
  • Web-based CMsquares user interface for RF, functional, application and protocol tests

Constellation software

In terms of software, a Constellation Insight Tool is designed to support NTN testing scenarios. It enables engineers to visualize satellite constellations in real-time, manage mobility and observe trajectories, says the company, effectively creating a digital twin of the live sky. Note that it allows for automated deployment and handovers, and integrates precise ephemeris data.

Rohde & Schwarz also offers a XLAPI Python Test Case package, which includes a range of Starlink LTE-DTC test scenarios. They cover, for example, LTE attach time and success rates in DTC mode, Event A3 handover, cell reselection between intra-frequency LTE DTC cells and recovery after radio link failure (RLF) on LTE DTC cells.

Rohde & Schwarz has been demonstrating the NTN testing capabilities of the CMX500 at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
