And NR-NTN stands for New Radio-Non-Terrestrial Network.<\/p><div class=\"elect-test\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-709831382\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() > 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<BR>\r\n<\/div>\n<h2>Rel-19<\/h2>\n<p>Note that 5G-advanced has also been dubbed as 5.5G.<\/p><div class=\"elect-post-content-2\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-1214193020\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() <= 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>The 3GPP Release 19 of 5G Advanced is not, currently, officially available to the public. But it has reached &#8220;frozen&#8221; status, in September.<\/p>\n<p>Release 19 introduces a concept of &#8220;<a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.3gpp.org\/technologies\/rel19-aiot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ambient IoT<\/a>&#8221; for passive devices to harvest energy from the environment in a small form factor, says the 3GPP standards body.<\/p>\n<h2>Satcoms<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;By partnering with Airbus Defence and Space, Eutelsat and partners, this innovative step in the integration of terrestrial and non-terrestrial networks proves why collaboration is an essential ingredient in boosting competitiveness and growth of Europe\u2019s satellite communications sector,&#8221; said <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/connectivity.esa.int\/news\/esa-eutelsat-airbus-mediatek-and-partners-successfully-test-5gadvanced-nrntn-connection-over-oneweb-leo-satellites-conditional-handover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">David Phillips<\/a>, head of the systems, strategic programme lines and technology department within ESA\u2019s Connectivity and Secure Communications directorate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;ESA is delighted to have exchanged knowledge and expertise with industry, as we work towards our joint aim to provide seamless connectivity for the benefit of Europe and beyond.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The ESA&#8217;s Connectivity and Secure Communications directorate hosts the agency&#8217;s &#8220;Space for 5G\/6G &amp; Sustainable Connectivity&#8221; programme.<\/p>\n<h2>NTN handover<\/h2>\n<p>For its part, Airbus highlighted the radio capabilities of the satellites.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This connectivity demonstration performed with Airbus-built LEO Eutelsat satellites confirms our product adaptability,&#8221; said Elodie Viau, head of telecom and navigation systems at Airbus.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The successful showcase of Advanced New Radio NTN handover capability marks a major step towards enabling seamless, global broadband connectivity for 5G devices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Channel characterisation<\/h2>\n<p>Rohde &amp; Schwarz was contributing test and measurement expertise. For real-time NR-NTN channel characterisation, it used the company&#8217;s high-end signal generation and analysis instruments R&amp;S SMW200A and FSW.<\/p>\n<p>Goce Talaganov, vice-president of mobile radio testers at Rohde &amp; Schwarz, commented: &#8220;Our CMX500-based NTN test suite replicated the Ku-band conditional handover scenarios in the lab.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This rigorous testing, which addresses the challenges of satellite-based communications, paved the way for further performance optimisation of MediaTek\u2019s and Sharp\u2019s 5G-Advanced NTN devices.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>5G-Advanced<\/h2>\n<p>Other parties, of course, have been advancing space-based 5G connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>AST, for example, has been working on space-based <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electronicsweekly.com\/news\/business\/att-google-vodafone-back-ast-mobiles-space-based-5g-connectivity-2024-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5G connectivity<\/a>. And Vodafone has highlighted making a space-enabled <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electronicsweekly.com\/news\/vodafone-makes-space-video-call-from-uk-not-spot-with-standard-smartphone-2025-02\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">video call<\/a> in a Not-Spot. And the <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electronicsweekly.com\/news\/products\/rf-microwave-optoelectronics\/esa-telesat-establish-5g-connection-with-non-geostationary-satellite-2025-01\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ESA and Telesat<\/a> have been establishing a 5G connection with non-geostationary satellite.<\/p>\n<p>Also, Sateliot and Nordic Semi have also connected <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electronicsweekly.com\/news\/sateliot-nordic-semi-connect-5g-iot-device-from-leo-satellites-2025-10\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">5G IoT devices<\/a> from LEO satellites<\/p>\n<p>And, in May, LG was demonstrating in-vehicle calls &#8211; an IoT-NTN vehicle bringing <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electronicsweekly.com\/news\/lg-demos-iot-ntn-vehicle-bringing-emergency-calls-to-streets-of-paris-2025-05\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emergency calls<\/a> to the streets of Paris.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, as far back as 2022 <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.electronicsweekly.com\/news\/satixfy-demonstrates-5g-link-through-leo-satellite-constellation-2022-07\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SatixFy<\/a> was demonstrating a 5G link through LEO satellite constellation.<\/p>\n<p><em>Image: OneWeb<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The European Space Agency (ESA), MediaTek, Eutelsat, Airbus, Sharp, ITRI, and Rohde &amp; Schwarz are highlighting what they describe as world\u2019s first Rel-19 5G-Advanced NR-NTN connection over LEO satellites.
