{"id":885684,"date":"2025-12-09T15:34:52","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T15:34:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.electronicsweekly.com\/?p=885684"},"modified":"2025-12-10T09:58:54","modified_gmt":"2025-12-10T09:58:54","slug":"a-proper-isolated-dc-current-sensor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.electronicsweekly.com\/blogs\/engineer-in-wonderland\/a-proper-isolated-dc-current-sensor-2025-12\/","title":{"rendered":"A proper isolated dc current sensor?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An isolated dc current sensor is required.<\/p><div class=\"elect-content\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-963678629\"><div id=\"x02\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() <= 768) { googletag.display('x02'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>Isolation in this case, is from the mains, and it transpires that finding something that will do the job safely is tricky.<\/p><div class=\"elect-test\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-108456652\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() > 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<BR>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>Three isolated Hall-based current sensing modules are easy to obtain, as far as I can tell, based on:<\/p><div class=\"elect-post-content-2\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-518545494\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() <= 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Allegro&#8217;s ACS712 or clones<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allegromicro.com\/-\/media\/files\/datasheets\/acs758-datasheet.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Allegro&#8217;s ACS758<\/a> or clones<\/li>\n<li><a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winson.com.tw\/uploads\/images\/WCS1800.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Winson&#8217;s WCS1800<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All will work with a 5V MCU on the cool side.<\/p>\n<p>A heath warning: <strong>Do not mess with the mains if you don&#8217;t know what you are doing<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIn modules, any safety performance that these devices have is often ruined by poor pcb design.<\/p>\n<p>WCS1800 is linear over \u00b125A and has a cable pass-through hole so its isolation is beyond question if mains insulated wire is used for the high-voltage circuit.<br \/>\nHowever, it is not factory-calibrated, and both gain (72\u00b112mV\/A, ~+2% ~-0.5% over -20 +40\u00b0C) and offset (\u00b1150mV, \u00b11mV\/\u00b0C) are quite variable so <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.winson.com.tw\/uploads\/images\/WCS%20Application%20note.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">calibration, possibly regularly<\/a>, is necessary.<br \/>\nAs it is has a hole, multiple turns can be passed through it to increase gain.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/static.electronicsweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/09153934\/Allegro-ACS758-current-sensor-package.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-885691\" src=\"https:\/\/static.electronicsweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/09153934\/Allegro-ACS758-current-sensor-package-300x252.webp\" alt=\"Allegro ACS758 current sensor package\" width=\"300\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.electronicsweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/09153934\/Allegro-ACS758-current-sensor-package-300x252.webp 300w, https:\/\/static.electronicsweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/09153934\/Allegro-ACS758-current-sensor-package.webp 398w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>ACS758 (<strong>right<\/strong>) comes in a \u00b150A version, is factory-calibrated, and is rated for 4.8kVrms for a minute. Its isolation is rated for 1,358Vpeak basic, and 672Vpeak reinforced. Creepage and clearance are 6.9mm. Gain is 40mV\/A and offset is \u00b15mV at 25\u00b0C. It has a built-in conductor, and is therefore limited to one turn.<br \/>\n<a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/dfimg.dfrobot.com\/5d303ff74db88f1df9d80a04\/wiki\/4aa9593ff5ea7e6170267551a2553281.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sinomags&#8217; STK-600\/M (data sheet is from DF Robot)<\/a> is based on TMR and is similar to ASC758, comes in a \u00b150A version, and is rated for 4kVrms for a minute, with 8mm creepage and clearance.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.allegromicro.com\/-\/media\/files\/datasheets\/acs712-datasheet.ashx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Allegro&#8217;s ACS712<\/a> comes in a \u00b15A version, and so would be perfect, except that it is only rated for basic isolation at 297V, with 4mm creepage and clearance. It does not have a reinforced isolation rating, and so can only be used on the mains safely under limited circumstances. Gain is 180 to 190mV\/A.<br \/>\nIf only functional isolation was needed &#8211; for ground-loop breaking, for example &#8211; this seems to be a great part.<\/p>\n<p>None of the above have a reference voltage output, and instead they need to be measured against Vdd\/2.<\/p>\n<p>Oh where is the reasonably-priced 5A sensor with reinforced isolation &#8211; does anyone know??<br \/>\nThe application is rectified mains-fed motor armature and field current measurement.<\/p>\n<p>A couple of ACS758 modules are winging their way, and if the boards are well designed and the chips are genuine, they might be the answer&#8230;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An isolated dc current sensor is required.
