But sensors monitoring farms, forests, oceans and infrastructure potentially need to connect from anywhere. Satellite IoT, and especially direct-to-device connectivity, makes that possible.<\/p><div class=\"elect-post-content-2\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-1488879249\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() <= 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cThis is how we accelerate the next generation of D2D services, by working together,\u201d said <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/lacuna-space.com\/lacuna-opens-d2d-satellite-iot-network-for-global-collaboration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Rob Spurrett<\/a>, CEO of Lacuna Space. \u201cPartners can now fly our proven LoneWhisper gateway payloads on their own satellites and instantly join an established global network for low-power IoT connectivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Lacuna Space<\/h2>\n<p>Lacuna Space is a UK and Dutch company \u2013 headquartered at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory Harwell Campus in Didcot, pictured right \u2013 that provides low-cost global connections, for short data messages to sensors and mobile equipment. The company describes it as an ultra-low cost tracking and detection service.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is for satellite coverage to fill connectivity gaps in hard-to-reach areas that are without cellular or Wi-Fi signals.
