{"id":891372,"date":"2026-03-17T06:35:38","date_gmt":"2026-03-17T06:35:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.electronicsweekly.com\/?p=891372"},"modified":"2026-03-24T14:08:34","modified_gmt":"2026-03-24T14:08:34","slug":"governmet-to-spend-2bn-on-quantum-computing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.electronicsweekly.com\/news\/business\/governmet-to-spend-2bn-on-quantum-computing-2026-03\/","title":{"rendered":"Government to spend \u00a32bn on quantum computing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The government announced today that it is to spend \u00a32bn on quantum computing research over the next four years.<\/p><div class=\"elect-content\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-120049277\"><div id=\"x02\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() <= 768) { googletag.display('x02'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>The Department of Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) says it is encouraging companies to initially<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>build prototype quantum computers with a view to having commercial versions available in the next decade.<\/p><div class=\"elect-test\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-179046496\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() > 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<BR>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>DSIT is targeting applications<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in financial services, quantum navigation, energy and pharmaceuticals.<\/p><div class=\"elect-post-content-2\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-1137146405\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() <= 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>The next step in the UK\u2019s plans for\u202fquantum\u202ftechnology, says the government, will\u202fhelp deliver personalised treatments,\u202f potential\u202fcures\u202ffor diseases,\u202f safeguard\u202fnational security\u202fand \u202fdeliver high-paid jobs\u202f\u2013\u202frevolutionising\u202fthe health and wealth of people across the UK\u202fand delivering on the government\u2019s <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/collections\/the-uks-modern-industrial-strategy-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Modern Industrial Strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The UK will\u202f become\u202fthe first country to benefit from\u202frevolutionary quantum computers,\u202fsensors\u202fand networks,\u202fand support the\u202f emergence of the\u202fnext generation of leading British companies that will help\u202fshape the curve of progress, it added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As of today, the UK is the first country in the world to commit to an advanced procurement to build large-scale quantum computers on our shores by the early 2030s. Joining\u202fR&amp;D,\u202f manufacturing, software,\u202fhardware\u202fand procurement\u202finto a single programme, we will be\u202fworld leaders in developing and deploying large-scale quantum computers,&#8221; says DSIT.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These\u202fsystems will be built\u202fin Britain\u202f\u2013\u202fcreating British jobs, new opportunities for British businesses and opening new routes of investment to flow into \u202four\u202feconomy\u202ffrom all over the world.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Technology secretary Liz Kendall said: &#8220;I am determined this country grasps the benefits\u00a0 quantum computing will bring. It is only by keeping pace\u202fwith technological progress\u202fthat we\u202f can deliver the\u202fhigh-paid jobs,\u202fcutting-edge\u202fpublic services\u202fand innovations which change lives.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today\u2019s announcements are an\u202finvestment in\u202four\u202ffuture &#8211; unlocking\u202fbetter health, wealth and more opportunities for communities across the country.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This government is ushering in a quantum leap &#8211; making the choice today to back UK scientists, companies,\u202fand innovators so we can\u202fdeliver a future that works for all.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>ProQure:Scaling UK Quantum Computing\u202f&#8221;will\u202flaunch next week, where companies\u202fwill be invited\u202fto\u202ftable proposals\u202fto\u202fpartner with\u202fus\u202fto deliver\u202fstate-of-the-art\u202fprototypes for evaluation.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Prototypes will then be assessed, with the most promising companies invited to deliver larger- scale machines for use by\u202fscientists, researchers, the public sector and businesses, as part of our national computing infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-305788 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/static.electronicsweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/26\/2013\/09\/Quantum-computing-at-Bristol-150x124.jpg\" alt=\"Government to spend \u00a32bn on quantum computing\" width=\"150\" height=\"124\" \/>&#8220;This\u202fwill also accelerate growth of the UK\u2019s already thriving\u202fquantum industry-supporting homegrown firms\u202fas they scale-up and grow while building an environment which encourages private backers from around the world to pour money into the sector, capturing everything from hardware,\u202fprocessors\u202fand\u202fmanufacturing through to sustained investment in UK supply chains.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Estimates show <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oxfordeconomics.com\/resource\/quantum-computing-could-boost-uk-productivity-and-gdp-growth-but-government-support-is-crucial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">quantum could boost productivity by 7% in\u202fthe next two decades<\/a>, creating more than 100,000 jobs in the\u202fprocess. That would mean\u202f\u00a3212bn-worth of economic impact\u202f\u2013 the equivalent of adding the <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/economy\/grossdomesticproductgdp\/bulletins\/regionaleconomicactivitybygrossdomesticproductuk\/1998to2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">combined annual GDP of Wales and Northern Ireland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The technology is already being put to work\u202facross the country, with Q-BIOMED researchers at the University College\u202fLondon exploring wearable brain scanners to support people suffering from\u202fepilepsy.<\/p>\n<p>Laying the foundations that will give the UK a rich pool of quantum talent,\u202fthe government\u2019s flagship\u202fTechFirst programme will launch new partnerships with\u202fcompanies in the sector\u202f\u2013\u202foffering up to 100 fully funded internships. This will give people the tools they need to embark on future, high-paying careers in the field.<\/p>\n<p>The UK launched \u00a0a National Quantum Technologies programme in 2014, which has\u202falready been backed by more than\u202f\u00a31bn in public funding to support skills, research and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The UK\u2019s credentials as a global magnet for private investment are also thriving.\u202fCoinciding with today\u2019s announcements, several global companies\u202fare announcing technical breakthroughs delivered in the UK, as well as\u202fnew and recent investment commitments including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Infleqtion\u202fhas\u202fdelivered a 100-qubit quantum computer at the National Quantum Computing Centre, marking a significant step forward in developing large-scale systems for operational capability<\/li>\n<li>Vescent\u00a0has selected the UK\u2019s National\u00a0Physical Laboratory\u00a0for its next office outside the US, backing\u00a0worldleading\u00a0talent and\u00a0expertise\u00a0across UK institutions<\/li>\n<li>IonQ\u202fhas formed a\u202fmajor strategic research partnership with Cambridge University.
