They also exceed ErP regulations at leass than 50mW power consumption for standby and off modes, with synchronous rectification.<\/p><div class=\"elect-test\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-1839363175\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() > 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<BR>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>The integration of GaN technology reduces complexity, said Power Integrations and can shorten design time, and often eliminate the need for heatsinks. It also reduces the total system cost, said the company.<\/p><div class=\"elect-post-content-2\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-1832602657\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() <= 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;With TOPSwitchGaN, we\u2019re pushing flyback into a power range previously not possible, allowing engineers to achieve high efficiency and performance with a far simpler architecture,\u201d commented Silvestro Fimiani, director of product marketing at <a rel=\"image\" href=\"http:\/\/www.power.com\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Power Integrations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The ICs provide 92% efficiency across the load range\u2014from 10% &#8211; 100% load and are able to deliver lower R<sub>DS(ON)<\/sub> than silicon ICs, for reduced conduction losses which &#8220;dramatically increase the power capability of flyback converters&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The ICs incorporate 800V PowiGaN switches &#8211; the high surge withstand capabilities and low switching losses providing headroom. It also allows for operation at switching frequencies of up to 150kHz, which minimises the size of the transformer, added Power Integrations.<\/p>\n<p>No-load consumption is below 50mW at 230VAC including line sense. Up to 210mW of output power is available for 300mW input at 230VAC to run housekeeping functions when units are in standby mode.<\/p>\n<p>Two packaging styles are available: the low-profile eSOP-12 surface mount package and the eSIP-7.<\/p>\n<p>The eSOP-12 packaging enables 135W (85\u2013265VAC) to be delivered without a heatsink; targeting space sensitive appliances.<\/p>\n<p>The eSIP-7 package has a vertical orientation which minimises PCB footprint and has a thermal impedance equivalent to a TO-220-packaged part. Board size can be smaller than an LLC, said Power Integrations. A metal heatsink can be mounted using a simple clip to extend the power range for applications including power tools, e-bikes, and garage openers.<\/p>\n<p>The TOPSwitchGaN ICs are pin-to-pin compatible with the company&#8217;s TinySwitch-5 off-line switcher ICs for designers to use the same methodology for 10W &#8211; 440W applications.<\/p>\n<p>Three reference designs have been released to correspond with 50W, 168W and 350W designs. The DER-1079 uses the TOP7074K to deliver a 60W, wide-range isolated flyback PSU for appliances.
