And the funding will officially be made available through the European Space Agency\u2019s (ESA) General Support Technology Programme (GSTP). This is the ESA&#8217;s flagship programme for maturing new space technologies from early-stage research to flight-ready demonstration.<\/p><div class=\"elect-test\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-1061990045\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() > 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<BR>\r\n<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;We are very pleased to be providing this further funding for new technologies across the space sector,&#8221; said the chair of the UKSA, <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/14-million-funding-boost-to-power-uk-space-technology-innovation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Lord David Willetts<\/a>. &#8220;The evidence shows this programme provides a real boost to individual companies and the wider economy.&#8221;<\/p><div class=\"elect-post-content-2\" style=\"margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center; \" id=\"elect-920526767\"><div id=\"DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile\">\r\n<script type=\"text\/javascript\"> if ($(window).width() <= 768) { googletag.display('DFP-EW-InRead1-Mobile'); } <\/script>\r\n<\/div>\r\n<\/div>\n<h2>GSTP<\/h2>\n<p>An example of previous allocations through the <a rel=\"image\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/general-support-technology-programme-gstp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">GSTP<\/a> have been cited by the UKSA. For example, the Bristol-based SME iCOMAT used funding to demonstrate an advanced composite manufacturing process for spacecraft structures (pictured).<\/p>\n<p>Cardiff-based Space Forge has also benefited. It used the funding to support development of a reusable re-entry heat shield. This is identified as a key technology for returning high-value materials manufactured in space.<\/p>\n<p>Specifically, design, prototyping and early testing took place ahead of flight trials. Apparently, this helped the company subsequently secure \u00a312.3 million in private investment and create 20 skilled jobs.<\/p>\n<h2>Impact<\/h2>\n<p>Note that the UKSA has been involved in the wider ESA GSTP programme for more than 30 years.<\/p>\n<p>Most recently, it committed \u00a346 million of UK funding at ESA\u2019s 2025 Ministerial Council.<\/p>\n<p>The agency&#8217;s impact analysis of 44 previous GSTP projects (2019\u20132024) found strong benefits for UK industry, especially SMEs.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Projects advanced an average of 2.28 Technology Readiness Levels, with some progressing up to four levels in a year.
