Subsea battery packs can be configured for pressure vessels

Providing power in extreme environmental conditions, in particular oil and gas applications, drilling or pipeline inspection, Ultralife has developed the SeaSafe Endurance battery module.

Ultralife Unmanned underwater vehicle

It is, said the company an easy-to-configure battery system designed to fit inside pressure vessels. If required, two batteries can be placed on top of each other or a battery can be placed in an adjacent vessel and connected for additional power. Suitable applications are autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), unmanned underwater vehicles (UUVs), oil and gas applications and oceanography equipment.

Batteries are available in 24V, 30V and 37V versions. They can be connected in series or in parallel to support equipment voltage and power requirements.

The SeaSafe Endurance battery has been used by Prevco for its PVC, aluminium or titanium vessels used in various applications from shallow-water observation remotely operated vehicles, monitoring equipment and deep-sea exploration AUVs.

Other pressure-tolerant subsea battery modules by the company are SeaSafe Direct and SeaSafe II, which can go down to 6,000m without a pressure vessel. SeaSafe Direct can be placed directly in water, and SeaSafe II is suitable for use in pressure-balanced oil-filled cases. These battery modules can also be connected in series or parallel to provide the required voltage or capacity/current.

According to Ultralife, all SeaSafe batteries offer four-times longer run-time compared to sealed lead acid (SLA) batteries, and 100% condition-based and safety monitoring with an integrated battery management system.
