Nvidia invests $4bn in Lumentum and Coherent for optical interconnect

Nvidia is investing $2bn each in Lumentum and Coherent to accelerate innovation in advanced optics technologies to enable AI infrastructure and systems designs.

In both cases the deals also include multi-billion dollar purchase commitments.

“Together with Lumentum, Nvidia is advancing the world’s most sophisticated silicon photonics to build the next generation of gigawatt-scale AI factories,” said Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.

Nvidia is investing in Coherent to support R&D, future capacity and operations as Coherent builds out its US-based manufacturing capabilities.

Optical interconnects and advanced package integration are seen as foundational to the next phase of AI infrastructure.

“Computing has fundamentally changed. In the age of AI, software runs on intelligence with tokens generated in real time by AI factories for every interaction and every context,” said  Huang. “With Coherent, Nvidia is pioneering next-generation silicon photonics to enable AI infrastructure at unprecedented scale, speed and energy efficiency.”

The deals position Nvidia to control the full AI computing stack from chips to the optical networking layer.
